Infrared sauna therapy is a somewhat new trend in professional athletes’ training regimes. Although the use of sauna or heat therapy has been around for many years in sports like bodybuilding and professional fighting, such as boxing, kickboxing, and MMA - usually to cut drastic weight days before weight restricted competitions - the new trend for professional athletes is for post-workout recovery and meditation.
A 2007 study for endurance performance athletes showed that “Relative to control, sauna bathing increased run time to exhaustion by 32% (90% confidence limits 21-43%), which is equivalent to an enhancement of approximately 1.9% (1.3-2.4%) in an endurance time trial.” - J Sci Med Sport.
